China’s Titanium Dioxide Exports Reach New High in 2024, with Opportunities and Challenges in the International Market

According to the data from the General Administration of Customs, China’s titanium dioxide exports performed strongly in 2024, reaching a new high. The cumulative exports throughout the year were approximately 1.9017 million tons, a year – on – year increase of 15.84%, with an increase of approximately 260,000 tons.

The growth of titanium dioxide exports in 2024 is mainly due to multiple factors. The global market’s demand for titanium dioxide continues to grow, especially in industrial fields such as coatings, plastics, paper – making, inks, and rubber. The demand from emerging markets has a significant pulling effect. Developing countries such as India, Brazil, and Turkey are experiencing rapid economic development, and their demand for titanium dioxide has increased significantly, becoming the main export destinations of Chinese titanium dioxide. At the same time, Chinese titanium dioxide enterprises have made progress in production cost control, especially in the sulfuric acid production process, which can produce qualified products at a relatively low cost. Their high cost – performance ratio meets the needs of the emerging country markets.

However, China’s titanium dioxide exports also face many challenges. At the beginning of 2025, the EU imposed a high – value anti – dumping duty on Chinese titanium dioxide for a period of 5 years, with a tax rate as high as 39.7%. Subsequently, India also made a positive final anti – dumping ruling on titanium dioxide originating in or imported from China, recommending the imposition of an anti – dumping duty of 460 – 681 US dollars per ton on the涉案 products, with a validity period of 5 years. These anti – dumping policies have significantly increased the export cost of Chinese titanium dioxide, and the obstruction of the export market has intensified, which may lead to the problem of domestic overcapacity.

In the face of the possible continuous anti – dumping policies of regions such as the EU, Chinese titanium dioxide enterprises are also actively seeking countermeasures. On the one hand, enterprises will further expand emerging markets in Southeast Asia, Africa, South America, etc. These regions have great potential for demand growth and relatively less market competition, and are expected to become important growth points for China’s titanium dioxide exports. On the other hand, some enterprises have made breakthroughs in the chloride process technology, and the export proportion of chloride – process titanium dioxide is expected to gradually increase in the future, further enhancing the competitiveness of Chinese titanium dioxide in the high – end market. Large – scale enterprises are continuously expanding their market share through mergers and acquisitions and industrial chain integration, and the industry concentration will further increase, which helps to enhance the bargaining power and brand influence in the international market.
